Driving in Winter

The engine of the vehicle should be tuned up during the fall season. If the oil being used has not been changed for quite some time, replace it with fresh oil. All the lights should be in good working condition while the brakes should be adjusted and the voltage regulator and battery checked. The battery connections should be good and if the terminal posts are built up with corrosion, they should be cleaner with water and baking soda. All in all, the vehicle should be in a good working condition, but drivers should be mostly concentrated on the tires. These should be snow tires and should be put on early before snowfall. On-radial and radial tires should never be combined on a single vehicle. Cars that are front wheel drive maker should be incorporated with all-season or snow tires on the entire four wheels. The windshield wipers and windows should contain an adequate washer reservoir filled with a cleaning solution that should be freeze resistant.

Before the beginning of the trip, it is important to know the prevailing conditions on the road because winter driving is usually annoying, inconvenient and actually frustrating. One should be alert on any potential driving hazards including downed branches, electric lines, icy areas, bridges and trees. It is important to follow the plowed lane, while avoiding driving over the ridges located amid the plowed areas. Switching lanes requires slowing down, and signaling before moving. Unless when absolutely necessary, it is risky to pass a snowplow, spreader or even park in the street as the car might glide and lead to an accident. The road cannot be adequately cleared of snow by the snowplow if cars are on the road.

Even when equipped with a vehicle with favorable snow and ice traction, cautious driving is recommended avoiding disruption of flowing traffic. Although front wheel vehicles may are preferred compared to the rest for driving in winter, they lack flawless traction which may contribute to unexpected skids. In vehicles with rear -wheel drives, the loss of traction is easily felt unlike the front-wheel drives hence it is a wrong misconception to approach the recovery of a skid in the same manner for both of these vehicles. When the rear wheels start skidding, the steering wheel should be turned in the direction which the front wheels are intended to go. When the rear wheels slide left, the vehicle should be steered left.

When the front wheels skid, the foot should be taken off the gas while shifting to neutral and avoiding immediate steering. The wheels will skid sideways, slow the vehicle in the meantime and result in the traction returning. Skids can be avoided by braking gently and carefully on ice or snow while the brakes should be squeezed in steady and slow strokes. Before any driver embarks on driving in winter, necessary precautions should be put in place to avoid accidents.

The Fuel Saver

In today’s world, everyone is looking for ways to save money. One of the main ways people try to save money is with fuel saving ideas. Do fuel Savers work? There are a few simple ways to spend less money at the gas pump that, when followed correctly, definitely work.

You have to keep your fuel system clean. When the inside of your engine is clean and free of debris that mixes with your gas, your car will get more mileage per gallon than usual. Some products that have been shown to clean fuel systems are BG 44K, Chevron Techron, and Sea Foam. These products have all been tried and work according to customer reviews as opposed to other products that seem to appear from thin air as soon as gas prices skyrocket. These are easily found at any hardware store and all work to clean out your fuel system therefore cleaning up deposits found in your engine and increasing your fuel economy.

Besides cleaning your fuel system, you have to keep the rest of your engine clean. Get regular oil changes, change your air filter when you’re scheduled for a new one, and keep up on the other gadgets inside your engine. Although they may cost money now to replace and change, it is much less expensive than fixing them when they break later or having to replace your engine entirely. Keep up the maintenance on your car and you will save money.

A Good Vehicle

Using an Internet search engine and typing in a phrase like “How to choose the best truck” or even simply “About trucks” will bring up many specialty websites that are filled with tips on choosing the right truck for you. These websites will also have reviews of test-drives, detailed specifications of off-road vehicles, and even, information on how to drive them well! If you have a specific manufacturer and make in mind, then just type it into your search engine. For example, typing in “2004 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4×4″, will bring up various websites filled with full vehicle specifications and reports. “Truck World” is a good place to start as it is packed with all sorts of product guides, how-to guides and test-drive reviews.

Most buying advice seems to begin with asking you the following sorts of questions: Do you have a favorite automaker? If so, start there. Do you need a compact (smaller, better gas mileage) or full size (bigger, more engine options available) truck? How much space do you need and what are your seating needs? How long a truck bed do you need? Will you need to tow a trailer or a boat? And finally: What’s your budget? Like with all cars, prices vary. Base models start under $20,000 but those luxury and performance trucks cost a lot more.

Car Brake Repair

The security of your car is vital, whether it is a Mercedes or a Mazda – even the safest vehicle on earth can have brake failure. If your car’s brakes don’t work properly, the consequences could be fatal. Thus, the brakes are probably the most important part of your vehicle. Car brake repair knowledge is always good to have because you never know if or when your car’s brake system will let you down. If this happens while you’re driving let’s say in the desert, miles away from the nearest garage, you should be able to

  • Perform a brake inspection and troubleshoot the problem
  • Know what it takes to do a car brakes repair
  • If possible, do the fix yourself
  • If not, be able to describe the problem to someone who is able to repair your automobile brakes.

To become able to perform the work listed above, the first thing you need to know is how a car’s brake system works.

A drum system is utilizing hydraulic pressure to press a pad against a brake drum to slow down the speed of the vehicle. Here is how it works:

  • press the brake pedal
  • the piston in the master cylinder sends pressure via the brake lines held by the brake shoe to the wheel cylinders inside the brake drum
  • the friction caused by the shoe pressed against the drum is stopping the wheel from turning

A brake drum is a flat-topped and heavy cylinder, that you normally find somewhere between the wheel rim and the drive wheel. When you press the brake pedal, the friction material held by the brake shoes is pressed against the brake drum. This will slow the rotation of the wheels. A wheel cylinder contains pistons utilizing hydraulic power from the master cylinder to force the brake pads against the brake drum.
